Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Mannheimia, named in tribute to the German microbiologist Walter Mannheim.

Etymology: N.L. n. glucosum (from. Gr. adj. glukus, sweet), glucose; L. suff. -idus -a -um, denominative suffix; N.L. fem. adj. glucosida, pertaining to gluose; intended to mean pertaining to glucosides, which are fermented by almost all biovars.

Etymology: Gr. n. haima (Latin transliteration haema), blood; N.L. fem. adj. lytica (from Gr. fem. adj. lutikê), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. fem. adj. haemolytica, blood dissolving, referring to the hemolysis seen on blood agar.

Etymology: L. n. rumen -inis, stomach, especially first stomach of ruminants; L. fem. suff. -alis, suffix denoting pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. ruminalis, pertaining to rumen; intended to mean referring to ruminants, from which the bacteria have been isolated.

Etymology: L. adj. varius, diverse, different, various; L. suff. genus -a -um (from L. v. gigno, to produce, give birth to, beget), born from; N.L. fem. adj. varigena, intended to mean "of different origin", referring to the fact that strains of this species have been isolated both from ruminants and pigs.
