Type species: ¤ Mycoplasma mycoides (Borrel et al. 1910) Freundt 1955 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonyms: "Asterococcus" Borrel et al. 1910, "Asteromyces" Wroblewski 1931, "Borrelomyces" Turner 1935, "Bovimyces" Sabin 1941, "Pleuropneumonia" Tulasne and Brisou 1955.

Original publication: NOWAK (J.): Morphologie, nature et cycle évolutif du microbe de la péripneumonie des bovidés. Annales de l'Institut Pasteur (Paris), 1929, 43, 1330-1352.

Notes:
1 According to Neimark et al. 2002, Mycoplasma Nowak 1929 (Approved Lists 1980) is an earlier heterotypic synonym of ¤ Haemobartonella Tyzzer and Weinman 1939 (Approved Lists 1980).

2 The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes discussed the impact on the nomenclature of the Mollicutes of recent taxonomic studies on Mycoplasma mycoides indicating that it needed reclassification. Because Mycoplasma mycoides is the type species of the genus, any change in its name would have an impact on the names of all other organisms belonging to the genus, with noteworthy consequences on quarantine procedures and regulations. In order to avoid the social health issues that can arise following the renaming of regulated micro-organisms, a possible solution would be to define a new type species for the genus Mycoplasma. This option was discussed by the Subcommittee. Different opinions were expressed and no final recommendation was given.

Original article in IJSEM Online

Note: The transfer of ¤ Eperythrozoon coccoides (the type species of the genus ¤ Eperythrozoon) to the genus Mycoplasma means that the genera ¤ Eperythrozoon and Mycoplasma are heterotypic synonyms. According to Rule 44, the name of the genus must be Eperythrozoon because ¤ Eperythrozoon Schilling 1928 (Approved Lists 1980) has priority over Mycoplasma Nowak 1929 (Approved Lists 1980). In the paper by Neimark et al. 2005, the authors added a request for an Opinion concerning this problem. Consequently, according to Rule 28b(2), Mycoplasma coccoides (Schilling 1928) Neimark et al. 2005 is not validly published.

Notes:
1 For the transfer of Haemobartonella canis (ex Kikuth 1928) Kreier and Ristic 1984 to the genus Mycoplasma Nowak 1929 (Approved Lists 1980) it is necessary to substitute a new specific epithet to produce Mycoplasma haemocanis because there is an earlier homonym, Mycoplasma canis Edward 1955 (Approved Lists 1980) [Rules 34a and 41a].
2 Mycoplasma haemocanis (Kreier and Ristic 1984) Messick et al. 2002 is a nomen novum, not a combinatio nova as cited in the paper by Messick et al. 2002.

Notes:
1 In 2001, Neimark et al. proposed the transfer of Haemobartonella felis to the genus Mycoplasma with the Candidatus status: ¤ "Candidatus Mycoplasma haemofelis" Neimark et al. 2001. The Candidatus designation is for new, incompletely described taxa, in order to give them a provisional status; changing validly published names to Candidatus would lose their standing in nomenclature. Note: The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes discussed the impact on the nomenclature of the Mollicutes of recent taxonomic studies on Mycoplasma mycoides indicating that it needed reclassification.

Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (Edward 1953) Freundt 1955, subspecies.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) PG3 = CIP 71.25 = NCTC 10137.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: U26037.
Synonym: "Asterococcus mycoides subsp. capri" Edward 1953.
Etymology: L. n. caper -pri, goat; L. gen. n. capri, of the goat.

International Bulletin of Bacteriological Nomenclature and Taxonomy, 1955, 5, 67-78.

Note: The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of mollicutes favoured the combination of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides LC (large colony) strains into one taxon since the LC strains are more closely related to Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri than to the SC (small colony) strains of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides. These reassignments would have nomenclatural consequences. One possible solution would be to propose the combination of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides LC into the single taxon "Mycoplasma capri". As a consequence Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides SC might become simply Mycoplasma mycoides although the possible regulatory complications of these reassignments should be very carefully considered.
