Parachlamydia Everett et al. 1999, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Parachlamydiaceae Everett et al. 1999).
Type species: ¤ Parachlamydia acanthamoebae Everett et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. prep. para, beside, alongside of, near, like; N.L. fem. n. Chlamydia, taxonomic name of a bacterial genus; N.L. fem. n. Parachlamydia, resembling the genus Chlamydia.
Valid publication: EVERETT (K.D.E.), BUSH (R.M.) and ANDERSEN (A.A.): Emended description of the order Chlamydiales, proposal of Parachlamydiaceae fam. nov. and Simkaniaceae fam. nov., each containing one monotypic genus, revised taxonomy of the family Chlamydiaceae, including a new genus and five new species, and standards for the identification of organisms. Parachlamydia acanthamoebae Everett et al. 1999, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Bn9 = ATCC VR-1476.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: Y07556.
Etymology: N.L. n. Acanthamoeba,  taxonomic name of a genus of Acanthamoebidae; N.L. gen. n. acanthamoebae, of (living in) members of the genus Acanthamoeba.
