Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Quatrionicoccus Tindall and Euzéby 2006, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Quatrionicoccus australiensis (Maszenan et al. 2002) Tindall and Euzéby 2006.
Illegitimate synonym: ¤ Quadricoccus Maszenan et al. 2002.
Etymology: L. masc. n. quatrio -onis, the number four; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Quatrionicoccus, four spherical cells.
Valid publication: TINDALL (B.J.) and EUZÉBY (J.P.): Proposal of Parvimonas gen. nov. and Quatrionicoccus gen. nov. as replacements for the illegitimate, prokaryotic, generic names Micromonas Murdoch and Shah 2000 and Quadricoccus Maszenan et al. 2002, respectively. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2006, 56, 2711-2713.
Original article in IJSEM Online

Note: The name ¤ Quadricoccus Maszenan et al. 2002 is illegitimate because of precedence of the algal genus name, Quadricoccus Fott 1948 [Principle 2, Rule 51b(4)]. Consequently, a new genus designation Quatrionicoccus has been proposed by Tindall and Euzéby 2006.

Quatrionicoccus australiensis (Maszenan et al. 2002) Tindall and Euzéby 2006, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) strain Ben 117 = NCIMB 13738 = CIP 107055.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY007722.
Illegitimate basonym: ¤ Quadricoccus australiensis Maszenan et al. 2002.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. australiensis, of Australia, where the isolate originated.
