Type species: ¤ Thalassobacter stenotrophicus Macián et al. 2005.
Etymology: Gr. n. thalassa, the sea; N.L. masc. n. bacter (from Gr. fem. n. bakteria), staff, cane; N.L. masc. n. Thalassobacter, a bacterium of the sea.

Etymology: L. gen. n. arenae, of sand.

Note: A polyphasic taxonomic approach reveals that the type strains of Thalassobacter stenotrophicus Macián et al. 2005 and ¤ Jannaschia cystaugens Adachi et al. 2004 were highly similar and should be considered members of the same species. According to Rules 15 and 17, Pujalte et al. 2005 propose the unification of the two species Thalassobacter stenotrophicus and ¤ Jannaschia cystaugens as Thalassobacter stenotrophicus.
