Type species: ¤ Thiohalocapsa halophila (Caumette et al. 1991) Imhoff et al. 1998.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Thc. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").
Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; Gr. n. hals halos, the salt; L. fem. n. capsa, a repository, box; N.L. fem. n. Thiohalocapsa, intended to mean the sulfur capsule of the salt.
