Type genus: ¤ Thiothrix Winogradsky 1888 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Thiothrix, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Thiotrichaceae, the Thiothrix family.

Note: According to Rule 51b (1), the family name Thiotrichaceae Garrity et al. 2005 is illegitimate because it contains (i) the genus ¤ Achromatium Schewiakoff 1893 (Approved Lists 1980) which is the type genus of the family ¤ Achromatiaceae Massart 1901 (Approved Lists 1980), (ii) the genus ¤ Beggiatoa Trevisan 1842 (Approved Lists 1980) which is the type of the family ¤ Beggiatoaceae Migula 1894 (Approved Lists 1980), and (ii) the genus ¤ Leucothrix Oersted 1844 (Approved Lists 1980) which is the type of the family ¤ Leucotrichaceae Buchanan 1957 (Approved Lists 1980).
