Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Thiothrix, type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending to denote order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Thiotrichales, the Thiothrix order.

Note: According to Rule 51b (1), the order name Thiotrichales Garrity et al. 2005 is illegitimate because it contains (i) the genus ¤ Beggiatoa Trevisan 1842 (Approved Lists 1980) which is the type of the order ¤ Beggiatoales Buchanan 1957 (Approved Lists 1980), and (ii) the genus ¤ Leucothrix Oersted 1844 (Approved Lists 1980) which is the type of the family ¤ Leucotrichaceae Buchanan 1957 (Approved Lists 1980).
