Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Ophiophycus, is in reference to the snake-like appearance of filaments, where apical cells may have two large vacuoles that resemble eyes. “ophio” snake, “phycus” algae (G.) (botanical tradition treats gender of phycus as masculine)
