N.L. gen. masc. n. tissieri, of Tissier, named after Professor Henry Tissier, a French paediatrician at the Pasteur Institute (Paris), who first isolated a bacterium characterized by a Y-shaped morphology, ‘bifid’, from the intestinal flora of breast-fed infants, he named the bacterium ‘bifidus’
