Micropolyspora Lechevalier et al. 1961, genus.
Type species: ¤ Micropolyspora brevicatena Lechevalier et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. adj. mikros, small; Gr. adj. polu, many; Gr. fem. n. spora, a seed and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Micropolyspora, the small many spored (organism).
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: LECHEVALIER (H.A.), SOLOTOROVSKY (M.) and McDURMONT (C.I.): A new genus of the Actinomycetales: Micropolyspora gen. nov. Journal of General Microbiology, 1961, 26, 11-18.

¤ Nocardia Trevisan 1889 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note 1:

  • Goodfellow and Pirouz 1982 propose to transfer ¤ Micropolyspora brevicatena Lechevalier et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Micropolyspora, to the genus ¤ Nocardia as ¤ Nocardia brevicatena (Lechevalier et al. 1961) Goodfellow and Pirouz 1982, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Micropolyspora to ¤ Nocardia.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 9. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1982, 32, 384-385.
Effective publication: GOODFELLOW (M.) and PIROUZ (T.): Numerical classification of sporoactinomyces containing meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall. J. Gen. Microbiol., 1982, 128, 503-527.
Validation List no. 29 in IJSEM Online - Original publication Online
  • Goodfellow and Pirouz 1982 proposed that the type species of Micropolyspora be transferred to the Nocardia. These authors did not, however, make any proposal regarding the transfer of ¤ Micropolyspora angiospora Zhukova et al. 1968 (Approved Lists 1980), ¤ Micropolyspora faeni Cross et al. 1968 (Approved Lists 1980), ¤ Micropolyspora internatus Agre et al. 1974 (Approved Lists 1980), and ¤ Micropolyspora rectivirgula (Krasil'nikov and Agre 1964) Prauser and Momirova 1970 (Approved Lists 1980) to either Nocardia or another genus.

Note 2: Noting that Micropolyspora brevicatena, the type species of its genus, had been transferred to the genus Nocardia, McCarthy et al. [1] proposed conservation of Micropolyspora with a new type species, Micropolyspora faeni. Subsequently, Kurup and Agre [2] proposed the new genus name Faenia for the remaining species formerly embraced in the genus Micropolyspora. Lacey et al. [3] then published an amended request for an opinion in which they proposed that Micropolyspora be conserved over Faenia. The Judicial Commission [4] voted to deny the two actions proposed.

Micropolyspora internatus Agre et al. 1974, species.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) INMI 632 = JCM 3315.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB588632.
    Etymology:
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).

Note: The inclusion of Micropolyspora brevicatena Lechevalier et al. 1961(Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Micropolyspora, in the genus Nocardia makes Micropolyspora a synonym of the latter [1, 2]. Of the several species included in the genus Micropolyspora all, except Micropolyspora internatus, have been transferred in another genera. V.P. Kurup (1981) [3], suggested the new combination "Saccharomonospora internatus" (sic) for Micropolyspora internatus. This nomenclatural change has not been validly published and it has yet to be established that "Saccharomonospora internatus" is sufficiently distinct from Saccharomonospora viridis (Schuurmans et al. 1956) Nonomura and Ohara 1971 (Approved Lists 1980) to justify its status as a separate species of the genus Saccharomonospora [4].
