Nocardia Trevisan 1889, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Nocardiaceae Castellani and Chalmers 1919 [Approved Lists 1980]).

Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Nocardia, named after Edmond Nocard (1850–1903), a French veterinarian who first isolated members of this taxon.

Stackebrandt et al. 1982 [1] proposed combining Nocardia cellulans, ¤ Brevibacterium fermentans, ¤ Brevibacterium lyticum, ¤ Oerskovia xanthineolytica, and ¤ Cellulomonas cartae in one species which was named ¤ Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980. The proposal to combine all five species under the name Cellulomonas cartae is not in accordance with the Bacteriological Code because the specific epithet cellulans in Nocardia cellulans Metcalf and Brown 1957 has priority over the specific epithet cartae in Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980 [Rules 38 and 42]. Therefore, the name of the taxon under which they are united is ¤ Cellulomonas cellulans (Metcalf and Brown 1957) Stackebrandt and Keddie 1988 [2, 3].

Note: Tuskamura [1] proposed rejection of the name Nocardia farcinica as a nomen dubium because some strains bearing this name were members of the genus Mycobacterium. However, Chamoiseau [2] has already established two species, Mycobacterium senegalense (Approved Lists 1980) and Mycobacterium farcinogenes (Approved Lists 1980), to accomodate the farcy-associates strains of mycobacteria, thus eliminationg this source of confusion. Therefore the Judicial Commission voted to deny the action proposed [3, 4].
