Rhodococcus Zopf 1891, genus.
Type species: ¤ Rhodococcus rhodochrous (Zopf 1891) Tsukamura 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. rhodon, the rose; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Rhodococcus a red coccus.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: ZOPF (W.): Über Ausscheidung von Fettfarbstoffen (Lipochromen) seitens gewisser Spaltpilze. Berichte der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft, 1891, 9, 22-28.

Notes:
1 On the Approved Lists 1980, the effective publication for the genus Rhodococcus is a paper by Goodfellow and Alderson 1977 (GOODFELLOW (M.) and ALDERSON (G.): The actinomycete-genus Rhodococcus: a home for the "rhodochrous" complex. J. Gen. Microbiol., 1977, 100, 99-122.). In this paper, the nomenclatural name Rhodococcus is assigned to the neuter gender! However, in accordance with Rule 65(2) a generic name which is modern coupound from two Greek words take the gender of the last component of the compound word. In Greek, kokkos is in the masculine gender, and the genus name Rodococcus should be assigned to the masculine gender.
2 According to Principle 2 and to Rule 51b (4), Rhodococcus Zopf 1891 is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of an algal genus: Rhodococcus Hansgirg1884.

Notes:
1 The approved Lists of Bacterial Names and the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names (Amended Edition) did not included the name Rhodococcus sputi which was published by Tsukamura (1978) in the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology [1]. In view of the fact that the name was not included in the Approved Lists, Tsukamura and Yano revived the name Rhodococcus sputi: Rhocococcus sputi (ex Tsukamura 1978) Tsukamura and Yano 1985. However, according to Rule 24a, Note 1, the name Rhodococcus sputi Tsukamura 1978 is to be treated as being included in the Approved Lists and this name has priority over Rhodococcus sputi (ex Tsukamura 1978) Tsukamura and Yano 1985 [2].
