Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Yania, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Yaniaceae, the Yania family.

Note: The name Yaniaceae Li et al. 2005 is illegitimate because the type genus ¤ Yania Li et al. 2004 is illegitimate (see ¤ Yania). Consequently, a new family designation ¤ Yaniellaceae Li et al. 2008 has been proposed by Li et al. 2008.
