Etymology: boe.ni’cke.i. N.L. gen. masc. n. boenickei, of Bönicke, in honour of the contribution of Rudolf Bönicke, a german mycobacteriologist, who first recognized the heterogeneity within the Mycobacterium fortuitum complex
