However, only the first proposal has been validly published [2].

Note: G.R. Carta (1973) described a cellulolytic organism in a U.S. patent and he named the organism Cellulomonas cartalyticum (sic). The name "Cellulomonas cartalyticum" Carta 1973 was in a patent and hence was neither effectively published nor validly published [Rule 25b (5)]. Therefore, this nomenclatural name cannot be revived (Rule 28a) and the citation of Cellulomonas cartae cannot mention the original author.

Note: E. Stackebrandt et al. 1982 [1] proposed combining Cellulomonas cartae, ¤ Brevibacterium lyticum, ¤ Brevibacterium fermentans, ¤ Nocardia cellulans, and ¤ Oerskovia xanthineolytica in one species which was named Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980. The proposal to combine all five species under the name Cellulomonas cartae is not in accordance with the Bacteriological Code because the specific epithet cellulans in Nocardia cellulans Metcalf and Brown 1957 has priority over the specific epithet cartae in Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980 [Rules 38 and 42]. Therefore, the name of the taxon under which they are united is ¤ Cellulomonas cellulans (Metcalf and Brown 1957) Stackebrandt and Keddie 1988 [2, 3].
