Opinion 74 in IJSEM Online

Note: The type strain NRC 34021 is no longer available. Strains from three culture collections, supposedly derived from the original strain isolated by Petter (1931), are all different [1, 2]. Strain JCM 8979 is phylogenetically and morphologically like Halococcus sp. Strain ATCC 43102is also a coccus. Strain NCMB (now NCIMB) 767 is phylogenetically related to the genus Natrinema. The strain deposited as NRC 34021 survives only in the laboratory of W.D. Grant [1]. This strain has been deposited in the National Collection of Industrial and Marine Bacteria as strain NCIMB 13488 [1]. In a Request for an Opinion, Grant et al. 1998 [1] proposed strain NCIMB 13488 as the neotype strain of Halorubrum trapanicum. As strain NCIMB 13488 is derived from the original type NRC 34021, strain NCIMB 13488 can be regarded as a subculture of the original type and is hence not a neotype [3, 4]. So, strain NCIMB 13488 may serve as the type strain of Halorubrum trapanicum (Petter 1931) McGenity and Grant 1996 [5].
