Etymology: N.L. n. heliotrinum, heliotrine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid; L. part. adj. reducens, leading back, bringing back and in chemistry converting to a different oxidation state; N.L. part. adj. heliotrinreducens, referring to the organisms ability to bring about oxidative cleavage of the heliotrine molecule.

3 The specific epithet heliotrinreducens (sic) has been corrected in the new combination Slackia heliotrinireducens [see, ¤ Slackia heliotrinireducens corrig. (Lanigan 1983) Wade et al. 1999, comb. nov.]. However the name "Peptococcus heliotrinireducens" corrig. has never been formally proposed before December 14, 2000 (date of publication of the amended Rule 61; see Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2000, 50, page 2239, column 2). Consequently, in the "List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature", the epithet heliotrinreducens (sic) has been maintained for Peptococcus heliotrinreducens.
