¤ Abiotrophia adiacens (Bouvet et al. 1989) Kawamura et al. 1995, comb. nov.

Note: The spelling of the specific epithet is adjacens in the nomenclatural name Streptococcus adjacens and adiacens in the nomenclatural name Abiotrophia adiacens. Y. Kawamura et al. used adiacens because the IJSB editor recommended to use i instead of j [1]. The Latin i, when used as a consonant, is often printed as j in earlier dictionaries and classical texts [2]. It is true that this practice has become rare [3]. However, a such change should be applied to many nomenclatural names (examples: Janibacter, Janthinobacterium, …) that is not desirable, because an essential point in nomenclature is the stability of names (Principle 1 of the Bacteriological Code (1990 revision).

Streptococcus alactolyticus Farrow et al. 1985 and ¤ Streptococcus intestinalis Robinson et al. 1988 are phenotypically indistinguishable as determined by whole-cell protein electrophoresis and a variety of biochemical tests [1, 2]. Given the congruence between whole cell protein electrophoreis and percentage of DNA-DNA hybridization, these data suggest that Streptococcus alactolyticus Farrow et al. 1985 is an earlier synonym of ¤ Streptococcus intestinalis Robinson et al. 1988 [1, 3]. Comparison of the 16S rDNA of the type strains of Streptococcus alactolyticus and ¤ Streptococcus intestinalis is also consistent with the existence of a single species [4].

Note: Data from DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, whole-cell-derived polypeptide patterns, and data from phenotypic testing demonstrate that Streptococcus anginosus (Andrewes and Horder 1906) Smith and Sherman 1938 (Approved Lists 1980), ¤ Streptococcus constellatus (Prévot 1924) Holdeman and Moore 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) and ¤ Streptococcus intermedius Prévot 1925 (Approved Lists 1980) are distinct species [1]. However, the taxonomic status of strains classified as Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus constellatus and Streptococcus intermedius has been the subject of much debate. The analysis of whole-cell protein patterns (P. Vandamme et al. 1998 [2]) supports the viewpoint that these three taxa constitute a single species which should be referred to as Streptococcus anginosus. Nevertheless, no formal proposition is made in the paper by P. Vandamme et al. [2].

¤ Streptococcus equinus Andrewes and Horder 1906 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: Poyart et al. [1] confirm previous results [2] which indicated that Streptococcus bovis and ¤ Streptococcus equinus represent a single species. According to Rule 24b(1) [not 24b(2) as erroneously cited in the paper by Poyart et al.], these authors propose to designate Streptococcus bovis (later heterotypic synonym) as ¤ Streptococcus equinus (earlier heterotypic synonym). The "Subcommittee on the taxonomy of staphylococci and streptococci" [3] and Schlegel et al. 2003 [4] also agree with the proposal by Poyart et al.

Note: Data from DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, whole-cell-derived polypeptide patterns, and data from phenotypic testing demonstrate that Streptococcus constellatus (Prévot 1924) Holdeman and Moore 1974 (Approved Lists 1980), ¤ Streptococcus anginosus (Andrewes and Horder 1906) Smith and Sherman 1938 (Approved Lists 1980), and ¤ Streptococcus intermedius Prévot 1925 (Approved Lists 1980) are distinct species [1]. However, the taxonomic status of strains classified as Streptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus anginosus, and Streptococcus intermedius has been the subject of much debate. The analysis of whole-cell protein patterns (P. Vandamme et al. 1998 [2]) supports the viewpoint that these three taxa constitute a single species which should be referred to as Streptococcus anginosus. Nevertheless, no formal proposition is made in the paper by P. Vandamme et al. [2].

Note 2: In the July 2000 issue of the IJSEM, Schlegel et al. [1] proposed the subspecies "Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli". It would appear that this name not validly published because no type strain was designated [see Rule 27]. The authors mistakenly designated a reference strain (strain HDP 90248 = NCDO 2620 in the abstract, or strain HDP 90246 = NCDO 964 on page 1433) rather than use the term "type strain". Despite this fact, "Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli" Schlegel et al. 2000 was cited in the Notification List published in the September 2000 issue of the IJSEM [2]. In 2002, Poyart et al. [3] proposed to place the strain HDP 90246 = CCUG 47831 = NCIMB 700964 (formerly NCDO 964) in the new species ¤ Streptococcus lutetiensis. The type strain of this species and the reference strain of "Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli" are known to belong to the same taxon [3]. In the May 2003 issue of the IJSEM, Schlegel et al. [4] describe the subspecies Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli, and formally designate a type strain. However, they do not cite the fact that Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli Schlegel et al. 2003 and Streptococcus lutetiensis Poyart et al. 2002 should be placed in the same taxon. If ¤ Streptococcus lutetiensis Poyart et al. 2002, which is validly published, is considered to have priority over Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli Schlegel et al. 2003 then placing the members of this taxon in a subspecies of Streptococcus infantarius would result in the creation of the combination "Streptococcus infantarius subsp. lutetiensis" and the name Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli Schlegel et al. 2003 is illegitimate. It is clear from the work of Schlegel et al. 2003 [4] that the authors intended to create a new subspecies Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli in the original work (Schlegel et al. 2000 [1]). The incorrect use of the term "reference strain" was discussed at a recent meeting of the Judicial Commission in Paris, but the solution sought by Schlegel et al., 2003 has created further problems since the consequences of the work of Poyart et al. 2002 [3] have not been taken into consideration.

Vandamme et al. 1998 [2]) supports the viewpoint that these three taxa constitute a single species which should be referred to as Streptococcus anginosus. Nevertheless, no formal proposition is made in the paper by P. Vandamme et al. [2].

¤ Streptococcus alactolyticus Farrow et al. 1985.

Streptococcus intestinalis Robinson et al. 1988 and ¤ Streptococcus alactolyticus Farrow et al. 1985 are phenotypically indistinguishable as determined by whole-cell protein electrophoresis and a variety of biochemical tests [1, 2]. Given the congruence between whole cell protein electrophoreis and percentage of DNA-DNA hybridization, these data suggest that ¤ Streptococcus alactolyticus Farrow et al. 1985 is an earlier synonym of Streptococcus intestinalis Robinson et al. 1988 [1, 3]. Comparison of the 16S rDNA of the type strains of Streptococcus alactolyticus and ¤ Streptococcus intestinalis is also consistent with the existence of a single species [4].

So, with reference to the first Principle of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision), Kilian requested that the original name Streptococcus sanguis be conserved [2]. The Judicial Commission denied this request, and no Opinion will be issued upon this request [3].
