According to Silva (1980) based on Hormogoneae subfam. Heterocysteae tribus Sirosiphoniaceae subtribus Stigonemeae Bornet et Flahault (1886b, p. 53). The same author notes that as circumscribed in the Index Nominum Genericorum, the Stigonemataceae include Lunoevia, the type of Lunoeviaceae Sukatscheff 1908, and Hapalosiphon, which is a senior taxonomic synonym of Lunoevia and the type of Hapalosiphonaceae Elenkin 1916. Silva (1980) also comments: "Sirosiphonaceae Frank 1886, based on Sirosiphon Kützing ex Frank 1886, is an earlier taxonomic synonym of Stigonemataceae. Both species originally placed in Sirosiphon by Kützing (1843, p. 219) were included in Stigonema by Bornet and Flahault, but those authors (1886, p. 338; 1886b, p. 51) retained Sirosiphonaceae (‘Sirosiphoniaceae’) as the name of the tribe containing Stigonema. In view of the widespread use of Stigonemataceae in preference to Sirosiphonaceae, it seems appropriate to propose that name for conservation.".Publication:
