Gobi, the Gobi Desert in Mongolia; Gr. fem. n. thrix, the hair; N.L. gen. neut. n. gobitricini, of gobi hair, referring to the Gobi desert, the first source of the soil from which the organism was isolated, and probably to formation of a streptothricin-like antibiotic (sic)
